J&J’s reputation in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts is hard-earned. For over 3 decades, we have cultivated relationships with the top mulch manufacturers in the area. That’s why we’re the top mulch supplier for local landscaping companies in the area.

In the backyard, our customers use our mulch to bring lush greenery and vibrant flowers to life. Whether you opt for hardwood or hemlock, mulch brings a beautiful contrast to your gardens.

In the front yard, our beautifully dyed mulches give your landscaping that extra zazz, a bit of curb appeal that will have the neighbors jealous.

The Science of How Mulch Helps Your Landscaping

Mulch doesn’t just look great. It also helps your lawn thrive! By reducing soil compaction, enriching the earth, and improving the moisture content, you set your gardens, plants and trees up for a fantastic growing season.

Reducing Soil Compaction

Compacted soil is downright awful for your plants. Roots can’t grow through it, and water can’t move through it naturally. It also deprives the soil of the oxygen it needs. Mulch acts as a cushion between your soil and elements, so things like footfalls and rain do not cause devastating compaction.

Enriching the Earth

Organic mulches like pine bark, hemlock, and our special J&J blend break down as they age. This decay is an important part of the process. As mulch decomposes, it releases its nutrients. Nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus give the soil the juice it needs to feed your plants.

Saving Moisture

The one thing plants need the most is water. Unfortunately, unprotected soil is prone to losing moisture to evaporation. Dry soil can’t nourish plants properly. Mulch helps on two fronts. First, it gives the soil shade, slowing evaporation. Second, it retains moisture after rain or watering.

“Friendly and helpful staff”

“Best service around, with a large selection of materials. I did a bunch of work in my yard this year (patio, drainage rocks, mulch, loam, etc) and went to J&Js several times. I was always greeted by a friendly and helpful staff.”

Starve Out the Weeds with Mulch

Just like your plants, weeds need sunlight to survive. But unlike your plants, weeds do not start with leaves above the mulch line. That means the same mulch that protects your soil from sunlight also blocks sunlight from weeds!

Weed prevention is also achieved by retaining moisture. Many varieties of weeds prefer dry soil, so forcing them into a more moist environment is actually a disadvantage for them.

Adding an extra layer of mulch on top of your soil also prevents some of the common methods of weed spreading. Seeds dropped by birds or blown in by the wind are likely to never reach the soil.

“They Offer Everything”

“J&J material has more selection than any Home Depot or Lowe’s in the area… They offer everything from crushed stone and loam to mulch and pebbles. They offer a huge selection of patio brick in a variety of styles not available in other locations.”

How to Spread Mulch

So you’ve gotten your mulch delivery? Now what?

1. Clear your beds.

Get rid of all the existing weeds, rocks, and debris. Be sure you dig the weeds’ roots out.

2. Measure your area.

You want to have a good idea of how much you’re filling it in. 2-4 inches is standard.

3. Lay the Mulch

Use a shovel or pitchfork. Use a rake to even the mulch out. Then leave a small gap around the plants.

4. Edge It.

Get a flat-edged shovel and give your mulch bed crisp edges on the side. It’s a much better look.

5. Water Lightly

A small amount of water will help the mulch settle into place and keep the material from scattering in the wind.

6. Rotate Annually

For the best results, you should throw out your old mulch and replace it every year.
