The Science of How Topsoil and Compost Help Your Landscaping
Loam is the foundation of a health landscape. Engineered to have the perfect mix of nutrients, our topsoil keeps in just the right amount of moisture to support strong root systems. We make sure we have the right amount of sand and clay so that our loam has open pores that retain moisture and allow roots easy growing space.
Mixing Loam & Compost
The 50-50 mix gives you the best of both worlds. Loam attracts the elements you need, while the compost decomposes into nutritious matter. The mixture of the two forms micro-clumps, which promote easy root growth and retain moisture.
Loam’s Secret Weapon: Physics
By using a formula that includes clay and certain organic materials, your soil will have negatively charged ions. These ions transfer with positively charged surface particles that have high concentrations of nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. All the elements your plants need!
Compost is Food for Beneficial Life
Compost takes care of another key component of soil health: beneficial bacteria and microorganisms. The decomposition of compost sends complex organic molecules downward, feeding fungi and actinomycetes, and all the other life in your soil. When they eat the complex molecules, they turn them into simple nutrients, ideal for your plants.

What You Can Accomplish with Topsoil & Compost
Start a New Lawn
Renewing an old lawn sounds like a daunting project. But with J&J’s delivery service, we take care of all the hauling. Our screened loam sets up your new grass for success.
Regrade Your Lawn
For erosion and water control, your lawn should slope away from the home about 2-3 inches for every 10 feet. If your lawn doesn’t, you’ll need a lot of topsoil to fix it.
Fill in Depressions
Tired of that huge pool of water that your lawn gets every time it rains? A delivery of loam will have your lawn even in no time.
“Very Knowledgable and Friendly”
J&J will probably have it, whatever it is, even when everyone else is out. … Their staff is very knowledgable and friendly and wants to make sure that you are satisfied. Thank you for helping get my project started and finished.

How to Handle Bulk Loam
What do you need to know to make proper use of your bulk loam delivery?
1. Measure your project
For topdressing, you want about a quarter to a half inch of topsoil. For grading, it’s more common to need 1-3”.
2. Pick the right time
Make sure the ground is not frozen and you can get a wheelbarrow from the drop site to your project site.
3. Clear the soil
Use a shovel or pitchfork. Use a rake to even the mulch out. Then leave a small gap around the plants.
4. Check your grading
Know how much loam you need and where to get proper grading before you start laying it out.
5. Rake after installing
You want to rake it out, and then use the back of the rake or a 2×4 board to smooth it.
6. Water lightly after installing
A gentle soak helps your loam or compost settle. Once it’s seeded, you’ll want to water profusely.
